Why you sleep badly in humid weather — and what actually fixes it

The short answer
Falling asleep requires your core body temperature to drop, which the body achieves mainly by evaporating sweat. When relative humidity is above about 70%, sweat cannot evaporate efficiently, so the temperature drop is delayed and sleep is lighter and more broken. Holding a bedroom at 45–55% humidity restores evaporative cooling, which is why dry air at 27°C feels more comfortable than damp air at 25°C.
Sri Lankan nights have a particular quality: the temperature on the thermometer looks reasonable, and yet the room feels unbearable. You lie on top of the sheets, the fan is on, and you still cannot settle.
That gap between the number and the feeling is entirely about water in the air.
Sleep is a temperature event
To fall asleep, your core temperature has to drop by roughly one degree. Your body does this by widening blood vessels near the skin and releasing sweat, which cools you as it evaporates. Evaporation is the engine — and evaporation requires the surrounding air to have room for more water vapour.
At 85% relative humidity the air is already nearly saturated. Sweat sits on your skin instead of evaporating. The cooling mechanism stalls, core temperature stays high, and the physiological cascade that produces deep sleep is delayed and disrupted.

Why turning the AC colder is the wrong lever
The instinct is to drop the thermostat to 20°C. It does help — an air conditioner removes some moisture while cooling — but it is an expensive and uncomfortable way to solve a humidity problem. You end up cold and dry-throated, running a compressor all night, and the moment the unit reaches its set temperature it stops dehumidifying while humidity creeps back.
Reverse the order and it works better: dry the air first, then set the AC warmer — often 2–3°C warmer for the same comfort. A dehumidifier draws a fraction of an air conditioner's power, so many households find the combination cheaper to run than AC alone, with a lower bill and better sleep.
Setting up a bedroom properly
- 1Choose a unit rated for the room size — for most bedrooms up to about 34 m², a 12L/day machine is right.
- 2Set it to 50% and leave it on auto so it cycles rather than running continuously.
