Humidity and allergies: why your symptoms are worse indoors

The short answer
Damp indoor air above 60% relative humidity simultaneously increases four allergens: mould spores, dust mite waste, bacteria and cockroach allergen. This is why allergy symptoms often worsen indoors in Sri Lanka despite regular cleaning. Holding indoor humidity at 45–55% suppresses all four at once, which is why humidity control usually produces more symptom relief than any single cleaning measure.
Allergic rhinitis is extremely common in Sri Lanka, and the pattern people describe is remarkably consistent: it is worse at home, worse at night, worse in the monsoon, and never quite goes away no matter how much you clean.
That pattern is not a coincidence. It is what happens when humidity, not hygiene, is driving the problem.
Four allergens, one cause
Damp air does not create one problem. It creates four at the same time, which is why humid homes are so much harder on allergy sufferers than dusty dry ones.

Cleaning attacks the visible residue of these. Dehumidifying attacks the condition all four depend on.
Why symptoms peak at night and in the morning
Two things happen after dark. Indoor humidity rises — temperatures fall, so the same amount of water vapour represents a higher relative humidity, and every sleeping person adds moisture to the room through breathing and perspiration. Meanwhile you spend seven or eight uninterrupted hours with your face close to a mattress and pillow, which are the highest-allergen objects in the house.
The result is a heavy overnight exposure that shows up as morning congestion, sneezing fits on waking, and children who cough in the small hours.
What actually helps, in order of impact
- 1Bring indoor humidity to 45–55% and keep it there — this is the single highest-impact change, because it suppresses all four allergen sources at once.
- 2Focus on the bedroom first. It is where exposure hours are longest and where results appear fastest.
- 3Wash bedding weekly at 60°C and use a HEPA vacuum on mattresses and soft furnishings.
- 4Improve airflow: pull furniture off walls, open built-in wardrobes periodically, keep bathrooms ventilated.
- 5Deal with any genuine water leak promptly — no amount of air treatment compensates for standing water.
Does air purifying help too?

45–55% relative humidity. Below 60% mould stops growing and dust mites decline; below about 40% the air becomes uncomfortably dry and can irritate airways in its own right.
Can a dehumidifier cure my allergies?+
No. It reduces the allergens in your environment, which for most people means noticeably fewer and milder symptoms. It does not change your underlying allergic sensitivity, and it is not a replacement for prescribed treatment.
Is a dehumidifier or an air purifier better for allergies?+
In a tropical climate, humidity control usually delivers more improvement because it stops allergens being produced rather than filtering them after the fact. Ideally you want both — several DRYAir units combine dehumidification with HEPA or ionizer filtration.
Why are my allergies worse during the monsoon?+
