The short answer
Dust mites absorb water directly from the air and cannot survive when relative humidity is held below about 50%. In Sri Lankan bedrooms, where humidity is usually 70% or higher, mite populations grow rapidly in mattresses and pillows. Washing bedding removes some allergen but does not stop reproduction — lowering room humidity to 45–55% with a dehumidifier does, and studies show allergen levels fall substantially within weeks.
Dust mites are microscopic relatives of the spider, invisible to the naked eye, and they live in every home on earth. They do not bite and they do not carry disease. The problem is their waste: dust mite faecal particles are one of the most potent indoor allergens known, and in tropical countries they are the single biggest trigger of household asthma.
The one fact that changes everything
Dust mites have no way to drink. They absorb water vapour directly from the air through their bodies. That single biological detail is the key to controlling them: when air is dry, they dehydrate and die, no matter how much dust or bedding is available.

A mattress in a humid Sri Lankan bedroom is close to a perfect habitat: warm, dark, full of shed skin cells, and permanently damp thanks to the air around it plus the moisture your body releases every night.
How to tell dust mites are affecting you
- Sneezing, congestion or a runny nose within minutes of waking up
- Symptoms that are worst in the bedroom and improve after a few hours out of the house
- Night-time coughing or wheezing in a child that daytime hours do not explain
- Itchy, watery or red eyes at night
- Eczema that flares after sleeping and calms when travelling
Why washing and vacuuming is not enough
Hot washing bedding at 60°C does kill mites in that fabric, and vacuuming removes surface allergen. Both are worth doing. But neither touches the deep interior of the mattress, the pillow core, the sofa or the curtains — and neither changes the humidity that lets the surviving population rebuild within weeks.
This is the frustration most allergy sufferers describe: enormous cleaning effort, temporary relief, symptoms back within a month. The cleaning was never wrong; it was just fighting the symptom instead of the cause.
The humidity-first approach
- 1Run a dehumidifier in the bedroom set to about 50% relative humidity, including overnight while you sleep.
- 2Wash bedding weekly at 60°C or above — with dry air, the mites you remove are not replaced.
- 3Vacuum the mattress and soft furnishings; a HEPA filter is worth having.
- 4Keep the room ventilated during dry parts of the day, but close up when outdoor humidity spikes.
- 5Give it four to six weeks — existing allergen in fabrics has to be removed as populations decline.

A note for parents

Are anti-allergy mattress covers enough on their own?+
Covers are useful — they block allergen from reaching you — but they do not reduce mite populations elsewhere in the room, such as pillows, carpets, curtains and soft furniture. Combining covers with humidity control is far more effective than either alone.
